HISTORY IN THE HEIGHTS
A California Heights community meeting will take place tonight from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Petroleum Club, 3636 Linden Avenue. The special guest will be Julie Bartolotto, executive director of Historical Society of Long Beach. Also speaking will be 7th District Council Office representative Tim Patton, Long Beach Police Department Senior Planner Steve Gerhardt, and project planner Steve Valdez.
IT DON’T MEAN A THING IF IT AIN’T GOT THAT…
The Bixby Knolls Business Improvement has partnered with the Petroleum Club and The District Weekly to create “A Mid Summer Night’s Swing” Friday, August 8 from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. The public is invited to hang out in the retro bar, card room, and the famous Red Room as a “date night” for couples or enjoy a drink while listening to Frank, Sammy, Dean, The Velvet Fog, and other greats. There will even be poolside bar and food service. No membership necessary. No cover charge. The Petroleum Club is located at 3636 Linden Avenue.
HEALTHY ART
Team Health, Team #2 for the Neighborhood Leadership Class of 2008 of Colin Powell Academy will be unveiling its artwork focused on health for elementary-aged school children from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 9. The murals depict healthful activities and foods. The unveiling will take place at the South Street Parkway with refreshments to follow at the Historic Long Beach Dairy and Creamery, 167 E. CALLING ALL YOUTHFUL PARISHIONERS
The Long Beach Branch NAACP is recognizing youth from the religious community that provide exemplary service for their churches and community outreach programs. GET FLUSHED FOR FREE
The Signal Hill Community Services Department, Signal Hill Petroleum, and Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine are showing Flushed Away as a free movie in the park on Monday, August 11. The movie will be shown under the stars on a 29-foot inflatable screen at Signal Hill Park, located at 2175 Cherry Avenue in Signal Hill. The showing will begin at dusk (around 8 p.m.). The August selection for the Bixby Knolls Literary Society is The Golden Spur by Dawn Powell. The book tells the story of Jonathan Jamison who, at the age of 26, leaves his Ohio home in search of his father in Greenwich Village. LIVING WELL WITH A DISABILITY
The Disabled Resources Center is offering “Living Well with a Disability” training from 1:15 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. every Wednesday for eight weeks. Assistance League of Long Beach’s Thrift and Vintage Shop will have its once-a-year “Asian collectibles” sale beginning Thursday, August 14 at 10 a.m. It includes clothing, artwork, ceramics, furniture and home decor. All proceeds benefit Assistance League of Long Beach philanthropic programs including Operation School Bell and their Orthodontic Center. The thrift shop is located at 2100 E. 4th Street.
