LIVING HISTORY
Long Beach Works is a youth oral history program that transforms community narratives into dramatic public performances. Tonight at 6 p.m., Carolyn Smith Watts and Charlie Basham will portray excerpts of Judge Marcus Tucker’s life narrated by Karen Harper. Tucker was the first African-American judge to serve in the Long Beach Municipal Court in 1977. The program will take place at 4260 Atlantic Avenue. GET HOOKED ON HELPING
Hooks ‘N’ Needles of Southern California will meet on Sunday, July 20, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the patio area of The Marketplace Shopping Center (corner of PCH and Westminster). The group will be making items (hats, scarves, toys, etc.) for Long Beach Cancer League’s Adopt-A-Family program. Some patterns and yarn will be provided but participants should bring a chair. The Questing Heirs Genealogical Society of Long Beach will have its July meeting on Sunday, July 20 at 1:15 p.m. in the Parish Hall of the Resurrection Lutheran Church, 1900 East Carson Street. The topic for July’s meeting will be “American Indian Research and the Internet” presented by Daniel Bartosz. WHAT’S IN YOUR SANDCASTLE?
The Aquarium of the Pacific, 100 Aquarium Way, as part of its Aquarium Lecture Series, is hosting Dr. Jenny Jay, who will discuss beach water quality, especially at beaches with high numbers of swimmers, and sand quality at popular beach locations where children build sand castles. Dr. Jay teaches civil and environmental engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles. She will be speaking in the Aquarium’s Honda Theater at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 22. Long Beach Memorial Medical Center each month hosts “The Inspirations,” a support group for persons living with chronic lung disease. A CREEPY, CRAWLY PRESENTATION
Friends of Long Beach Animals will have its annual membership meeting and election on Thursday, July 31 at 6:30 p.m. at the Signal Hill Community Center, 1780 E. Hill Street. The evening’s topic will be “Walk on the Wild Side.” The public is invited to meet Steve Strichart of the Southern California Herpetology Association and LBAC Officer Kevin Law and enjoy their presentation about creatures that crawl.
