Bixby Knolls’ First Fridays on Oct. 1 will be the kick-off for GLOBAL (Greater Long Beach Arts Lab), which celebrates and promotes Long Beach’s diverse arts and culture. GLOBAL occurs every October as part of National Arts and Humanities Month, a coast-to-coast collective celebration of culture in America.
Transforming Atlantic Avenue into “Art-lantic,” will be Expo galleries and live artists, violin virtuoso Jennifer Lindsay, Amoeba People, belly dancing, macro photography, a fair-trade caravan, “Spiked” improv comedy, free books, saxophones, tarot cards, renowned jazz/pop/Brazillian vocalist Anne Walsh, vintage vinyl, Dixieland jazz, cemetery tour ghosts, community drumming, a Bixby farmers stand, Long Beach Shakespeare Company’s production of Bent, a songwriter showcase, Rancho Los Cerritos “historic street walkers,” Sound Walk preview installation, book signing of The Nightmare Navigator by Billy Bonsangue, the Knolls Ranger mascot’s 129th birthday party, Timstrument, and a double helping of the unexpected.
Additionally, Seventh District Councilmember James Johnson will launch a “First Books at First Fridays” event at the Dana Branch Library, 3680 Atlantic Ave., and he will be reading children’s books beginning at 5:30pm. First Fridays participants can stop by the First Fridays Information Table from 6:30pm to 8pm, located on the northwest corner of Bixby Road and Atlantic Avenue, for info about First Fridays and area businesses, maps, and restaurant recommendations.
