Los Angeles artist Suzanne DeCuir will display a selection of her latest paintings at the Four Olives Café from Friday, June 1, to Saturday, June 30, in a show titled “Just a Moment.” A reception for the artist, open to the public will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, June 5.
DeCuir will be showcasing some of her recent Southern California and Mediterranean landscape. Her work was recently awarded a first place by Artist’s Magazine in the oil and oil pastels category from more than a thousand paintings submitted by artists across the country.
“I believe it’s possible to create an interesting painting from just about any subject, from a woman shaking out a beach towel to a couple asleep at a train station,” DeCuir said. “I begin by stripping such scenes of all extra detail, preferring to depict just a solitary figure or two in an uncluttered landscape. I am drawn to more restful images, probably because the rest of my life isn’t too quiet or restful.”
DeCuir likes to explore texture, pattern and color, and usually layers oils over acrylics. “Since acrylic paint dries so quickly, it’s possible to build up three or four layers of paint in one session,” she said. “I often use masking tape to preserve certain areas of color and then use a roller, called a brayer, to roll on layers of color in a spontaneous way. Finally I finish the painting in oils to add the richness and luster acrylics lack.”
DeCuir studied art at Loyola Marymount University, at the Rome Center in Italy, and, more recently, at the Otis Institute of Art and Design in Los Angeles. She resides in Westchester with her husband and three daughters.
