As Long Beach Police Department Academy Class No. 88 begins, more recruits welcome to apply

The Long Beach Police Department has started its third academy class in two years and is currently recruiting its next academy, according to city officials.

“I’m very proud of this new class of recruits and grateful that we are able to put more police on the street,” said Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia. “I have every confidence that these men and women will do an outstanding job of keeping our city and our residents safe.”
The City Council included the funding of the current academy— Class No. 88— in the Fiscal Year 2015 budget.
“We are pleased the new academy class is under way,” said Long Beach Police Chief Robert Luna. “These men and women have begun a process that will prepare them for a rewarding career in serving our community and make Long Beach a safer place for all people.”
A total of 45 Long Beach recruits have begun academy training. In addition, three recruits hired by the City of Gardena Police Department are participating in this class. The 27-plus-week course will challenge recruits mentally and physically as they are instructed in the many facets of law enforcement including criminal law, investigations, driver’s training, report writing, policies, procedures, cultural sensitivity and awareness, human relations, problem solving and mediation skills, according to the City.
Academy Class No. 88 will graduate in November 2015 and then continue their development as officers in the field training program, which consists of working one year with a field training officer, who observes and reports on the progress of the new officers.
