The office of 8th District Long Beach Councilmember Al Austin II, in partnership with a number of community organizations, will host a free end-of-summer event on Saturday, Aug. 22 from 11am to 3pm at “Pops” Davenport Park, 2910 E. 55th Way, to provide free backpacks to help more than 1,000 kids get ready for the start of school.
The backpacks will be filled with school supplies, and kids will be offered free haircuts, health screenings, resource information and food.
“This is the fourth year the 8th District has hosted the Back-to-School Summer Blast,” Austin said. “One the highlights of the year for me is helping to ensure that our kids are healthy and return to school with the tools they need to learn.”
The event will feature a soccer clinic, a jumper, an obstacle course, arts and crafts, face painting, an opportunity drawing, entertainment and fun for kids of all ages and the entire family.
State Senator Ricardo Lara’s office will give out first-aid kits, and St. Mary Medical Center and Molina Healthcare will perform health screenings. Assemblymember Mike Gipson’s office will provide child identification fingerprinting kits.
The event’s sponsors include: Long Beach Airport, the Port of Long Beach, the Water Replenishment District of Southern California, the Long Beach Police Officers’ Association, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW)—Local 11, Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services, Avanath-Northpointe Apartments and Walgreens.
