Back-to-school event to offer free backpacks, entertainment for families

Eighth District Councilmember Al Austin, Long Beach School Board Member Megan Kerr, Epicenter Church and the Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation & Marine are joining together to help Long Beach students get ready for the start of the new school year.

On Saturday, Sept. 6 from 10am to noon, school children and their families are invited to attend a free “back to school” event at Scherer Park, 4600 Long Beach Blvd.

The event will include face-painting, bounce houses and arts and crafts, courtesy of the Department of Parks, Recreation & Marine. The Jazz Angels, a youth jazz ensemble, will also perform. Free backpacks containing school supplies will be given out while supplies last.

The event will take place near the playground at Scherer Park.
“I’m happy to work with Megan Kerr, Parks and Rec, and Epicenter Church to serve our most important constituency— our youth,” Austin said.
