Bancroft Middle School’s flash backs create more than a ‘picture book’

Bancroft Middle School’s yearbook has been awarded first place by the American Scholastic Press Association. The award was given for excellence in the fields of writing, photography and page design. Advisor Linda McClure was surprised and excited by the honor.
“We all loved the flash backs theme and the students had a lot of fun combing through all the old Bancroft yearbooks (going back to 1948) to find pictures to include,” she said. “When I teach the yearbook, I really emphasize to the class that we are not just creating a picture book, we are creating a memory book that students will keep forever. Not only will they keep it, but students will go back and read it and look at it over and over years down the line. I know this because I graduated from middle school a long time ago and I still go back and look at all my yearbooks.”
Dr. Richard M. Plass, chairman of the judging committee said, “Our panel of judges are educators and are themselves very experienced faculty advisers for scholastic publications. This ensures the production of critiques and awards that are sensitive to school budgetary limitations and scholastic printing problems.”
Each school yearbook is scored on a point system and is awarded first, second, or third place in its classification.
The Bancroft 2007 yearbook was an excellent yearbook,” said McClure. “I was very proud of our yearbook class for how much writing they did and we were especially proud of the photos. It is sure to be another great book.”
The Bancroft Middle School yearbook for 2007 featured a 1950s diner theme. Bancroft is a magnet school with a student body of approximately 1400 and 53 faculty. The school is located at 5301 East Centralia Street in Long Beach.
