A woman riding a tandem bicycle with her husband was fatally injured in a crash in Long Beach over the weekend, and authorities are seeking the public’s help to find a motorist who police say might not know their vehicle was involved.

Gaylin Reese, 76, of Long Beach, was injured about 12:25 p.m. Sunday near Second Street and Marina Drive, and she died at a hospital, the Long Beach Police Department reported.

“The preliminary investigation revealed that a tandem bicycle, ridden by a husband and wife, was traveling eastbound on 2nd Street in the bicycle lane,” an LBPD statement said.

“There was heavy vehicle traffic at the time and all cars were at a stop,” police said. “The cyclists sideswiped a vehicle, lost control, and fell to the ground. After the collision, the involved vehicle drove away from the scene. It is unclear if the driver of that vehicle was aware of the collision.”

Paramedics took Reese and her husband to a hospital, where the man was treated for non life-threatening injuries, police said. Both were wearing helmets when the crash occurred, according to police, who said detectives were notified of the woman’s death on Tuesday.

No description was available of the vehicle that kept going after the crash. Anyone with information on the case was urged to call Detective Joseph Johnson at 562-570-7355 or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS. Tipsters may also use the website www.LACrimeStoppers.org.
