Little Penelope Lane is a brand of hand-crafted hair bows found online and in local boutiques. It was created by Long Beach native and mother of three, Sarah Hull. In 2003, Sarah and her husband Bryant had their first child, Katie, who has spina bifida. Sarah oftentimes dressed Katie’s hair with bows that she crafted. According to Sarah, these bows seemed to make the signs of Katie’s spina bifida— the wheelchair and walker— unnoticeable. Sarah continued the tradition of bow-making for her second daughter with a goal— to make hair accessories that both moms and daughters can enjoy together.
Katie, now 8, is Little Miss Wheelchair California 2012, alongside Long Beach’s very own Mary Zendejas, who is Ms. Wheelchair California 2012. Through her reign, Zendejas will speak at numerous events on behalf of the disability community, and Katie, serving as a role model for kids her age with disabilities, will be by Zendejas’s side.
The entire booth rental fee of this boutique will be donated to the Ms. Wheelchair California Foundation to help break attitudinal barriers to the disability community and to build disability awareness within society.
