A woman was shot Saturday, April 16 in downtown Long Beach and hospitalized.

Officers on patrol heard gunshots around 4:55 p.m. near the 300 block of Pine Avenue, according to Long Beach Police Department spokesman Brandon Fahey.

“The officers canvassed the area and located a female adult victim suffering from potential gunshot wounds to the lower body not believed life-threatening,” Fahey said.

She was taken to a hospital by paramedics. No other injuries in the area were reported.

While canvassing the area, police found a suspect holding a firearm and safely took him into custody.

The suspect has been identified as David Ryan Crouch, a 27-year-old resident of the city of Los Angeles.

A preliminary investigation by officers determined that Crouch was allegedly involved in an altercation with multiple unknown male suspects which escalated to an exchange of gunfire between both parties.

The victim was nearby when the gunfire began and was hit. Police said she had nothing to do with the altercation. Neither the woman’s name or age was released.

Crouch was sentenced to one count of discharging a firearm in a negligent manner, one count of a felon being in possession of a firearm, one count of prohibited possession of ammunition, one count of carrying a loaded firearm not registered owner, and one count of resisting arrest. His bail was set $35,000.

Police said while the investigation is still ongoing, they believe the motive may have been gang-related.

Correction: April 18, 3:12 p.m.: A previous version of this story stated that the shooting occurred on Sunday. The shooting occurred on Saturday, April 16. The Signal Tribune regrets this error.

  1. If this shooting occurred last Saturday, then this man has NOT been sentenced to anything at this date. If he was taken into custody by the police, then the charges mentioned are those which the police think he may be guilty of committing, but at the moment, this matter is pending a court appearance, and possible subsequent hearings in court.
