Champion swimmer to speak on environmental priorities at Port Fest

The Port of Long Beach will welcome three-time Olympic champion swimmer Aaron Peirsol to discuss his role as an environmental advocate on behalf of clean oceans at the third annual Green Port Fest Saturday, Oct. 13.
“Green Port Fest is an ideal venue for one of our nation’s top athletes, Aaron Peirsol, to talk about the importance of protecting and improving the health of the ocean environment,” said Long Beach Harbor Commission President Mario Cordero in a press release.
Green Port Fest is an event showcasing the Port’s leadership in bringing environmental priorities to the goods movement industry. The event is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and free to the public. There guests can see more than 70 interactive displays and tour the Port by train and by boat.
Peirsol’s appearance at Green Port Fest is sponsored by Toyota’s Engines of Change campaign, which highlights how a commitment to sport, community and making a difference in the environment can change the future. Toyota’s Engines of Change athletes aim to work to make a difference out of the pool and encouraging people to be inspired and inspire others.
Peirsol has teamed with Oceana, an environmental advocacy group dedicated to protecting and restoring the world’s seas. Peirsol is supporting Oceana through “Race for the Oceans,” a campaign to raise funds and awareness for healthier oceans.
A three-time Olympic gold medalist and world record holder, he is currently training for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
In addition to the displays on cargo operations and security measures at Green Port Fest, there will be live music and children’s activities. The event will be held at the Port Administration Building, with free parking at the Queen Mary, 1126 Queens Highway in Long Beach.
