The City of Long Beach issued a press release last week reiterating its warning to utility customers about a nationwide scam that is continuing to trick people into providing personal financial information in exchange for the false promise of getting their utility bills paid by the federal government.
According to the City’s press release, there is no such federal program, and the scam involves the perpetrators providing a bogus bank routing number for customers to use.
On May 10, 2012, the City of Long Beach issued a press release and posted a warning notice on its Utility Billing Web Site, reminding all utility customers to be wary of this and other scams that sound too good to be true or that promise something for nothing.
The City is encouraging residents to protect their personal information at all times and never give out their Social Security number or any other personal financial information.
