The public is invited to the fourth community workshop event marking the completion of the Green Terminal Island (TI) Freeway Transition Plan (Plan), a conceptual plan for transforming the freeway into an eco-friendly corridor that better serves the community and enhances the quality of life of surrounding neighborhoods in west Long Beach, according to city officials.
The free event is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 24 at 10am on Hill Street adjacent to Hudson Park, 2335 Webster Ave.
The community workshop will present preliminary designs for the transformed space and offer residents an opportunity to review and provide input on the high-level conceptual plan to convert the TI Freeway into a local-serving road with an associated greenbelt. The event will also feature interactive booths, demonstrations and refreshments.
The event will mark the culmination of earlier outreach efforts, including three community workshops conducted over the past year to define the community’s vision for the plan area, including design and uses by surrounding neighborhoods. The plan represents the initial step in a larger community outreach process that includes environmental review, traffic impact analysis and other technical studies.
The TI Freeway is the first of its kind to be studied for decommissioning in Southern California. The underutilized freeway has been listed among the top opportunities nationwide for replacing aging urban highways with boulevards or avenues that connect to a large network of streets.
The plan focuses on the one-mile section of the TI Freeway between Pacific Coast Highway and Willow Street/Sepulveda Boulevard that is owned by the City. The area is bordered on the west by the rail- and port-related industry, and on the east by Cabrillo High School, Hudson Elementary School, Hudson Park and the Villages at Cabrillo.
Funding has been provided by a Caltrans Environmental Justice Planning Grant.
