City of SH offering free after-school child care for Alvarado, SH elementary students

Now offered at the Signal Hill Community Center, the After-school Recreation Club, or ARC, is a free after-school program for kids in grades 1 through 5 who attend Alvarado or Signal Hill elementary schools. The ARC encourages health and fitness through fun, physical activity and balanced nutrition, and it is a supervised environment for children to be in after school.
Kids participate in at least 30 minutes of physical activity on school days, 90 minutes of physical activity on non-school days and a 30-minute “Homework Club” every day except Fridays. The children participate in arts and crafts as well as free play and try out a variety of sports and activities such as soccer, basketball, track and field, martial arts, dance and yoga. The ACR provides a healthy snack each day, and the children learn how to prepare healthy snacks and meals at home.
Staff have experience in working with children, are CPR/First Aid certified and participate in regular training. All children are picked up at school and walked to the Youth Center by ARC staff. Children are supervised at all times and are not permitted to leave the program unless they are signed out by an authorized adult.
The program is available from 10am to 6pm, Monday through Friday. Extended morning hours are offered during off-track periods from 7:30am to 10am, Monday through Friday, for $37 per week for residents and $42 per week for non-residents. There may be optional activities offered throughout the year that may require an additional charge, such as field trips or special events.
Program hours for school days are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 3pm to 6pm and on Thursdays from 2pm to 6pm. Off-track hours are Monday to Friday from 10am to 6pm (free), with extended care from 7am to 10am (paid).
