City of Signal Hill selects Nelson Academy’s environmental club for Sustainability Award

Earlier this month, Signal Hill Mayor Ed Wilson presented the City’s 2014 Sustainability Award to Nelson Academy’s Seeds of Change Environmental Club. On hand to receive the recognition were principal Denise “Sparkle” Peterson, teacher and club founder Lindsay Smith and several of the club’s members.

The Signal Hill Sustainable City Committee honored the Seeds of Change Environmental Club for modeling healthy eating habits, conducting monthly environmental seminars and encouraging schools across the district to implement their programs to decrease the amount of waste produced.
The mission of the club is “to reduce the amount of waste the school site produces annually by recycling, composting and donating uneaten food,” according to the City of Signal Hill. The club’s future goals are “to inspire others to make a difference by encouraging schools across the district to implement our program.”

According to the City, the club: transforms marginal grounds into fruitful and flower-filled gardens; sorts cafeteria waste for composting, recycling and garbage bins on a daily basis; utilizes food waste and shredded paper for composting; collects uneaten food for donation; and recycles bottles and cans.
