Community invited to 9/11 memorial ceremony

The City of Long Beach will host a public ceremony on Sunday, Sept. 11 to remember those who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The event will take place at Fire Station 8, 5365 E. 2nd St., at 9am.
“It is extremely important that we remember and pay tribute to the heroic public servants who gave their lives in the service of others,” said Mayor Robert Garcia.
The brief ceremony will feature Fire Chief Michael DuRee and Police Chief Robert Luna placing a memorial wreath in front of the fire station and Garcia calling for a moment of silence at 9:11am in remembrance of all the firefighters, police officers and innocent civilians who died that day.
“As we mark the 15th anniversary of this tragic day in American history, let us never forget those who lost their life on Sept. 11, 2001, in New York, Washington, DC, and Pennsylvania,” DuRee said. “We stand united as we honor their memory and pay tribute to their sacrifice.”
A large piece of the World Trade Center will be on display in front of Station 8 for the ceremony and throughout the day.
“This is an opportunity for us to stand together as a community and remember all those who lost their lives 15 years ago,” Luna said. “May we never forget.”
Second Street will be closed to traffic due to the Belmont Shore Car Show that same day.
