The funds will go towards childcare, infrastructure and park improvements.
Congressman Robert Garcia (CA-42) announced on March 14 that a total of over $15 million in federal funding has been allocated to Long Beach and Southeast Los Angeles to support community projects.
Garcia requested and secured these funds from the U.S. House of Representatives’ Appropriations Committee, which allowed congress members to submit funding requests for up to 15 projects in the districts they represent. These projects can either belong to state and local governments, or eligible non-profit organizations.
Five of these projects will be in Long Beach, receiving a combined sum of over $7 million for Fiscal Year 2024. The list of projects slated to receive funding in Long Beach includes:
- $3,443,700 to California State University Long Beach for enhancements to the Isabel Patterson Child Development Center.
- $963,000 to Long Beach Community College for the establishment of a Space Beach Research and Innovation Center in Long Beach.
- $1,000,000 to the City of Long Beach for improvements along the Studebaker Road Corridor.
- $850,000 to the City of Long Beach for upgrades to the Bixby Park Community Center.
- $850,000 each to the City of Long Beach for upgrades to the Heartwell Park Field.
- $500,000 to the City of Long Beach for enhancements to Martin Luther King, Jr. Park.
“These community projects aim to improve the lives of everyone in our district.” Garcia said in a public statement. “As we continue to work hand in hand with local partners, it is my priority to advocate for funding that will serve folks from every corner of our district.”
