Leukemia patient Jack Witherspoon was the head chef for the annual “Cooking Up Dreams” fundraiser held on Dec. 3 at the H.T. Grill.
Miller Children’s Hospital leukemia patient Jack Witherspoon, an eight-year-old who has been battling cancer since he was 2, was the featured chef at “Cooking Up Dreams,” a fundraising event designed to raise money for cancer research at the Jonathan Jaques Children’s Cancer Center (JJCCC). The young culinary artist prepared a meal for an evening of fine dining at a local Redondo Beach restaurant, the H.T. Grill.
Jack was looking for a way to pass the time in his hospital room when he discovered his appetite for cooking while watching television. “I just decided to watch the Food Network and I got really into it,” said Jack.
Today, Jack is an aspiring chef with big dreams. Hosting his own cooking event put his two passions to work— cooking and helping others. “I like raising money to help find a cure,” said Jack.
“He’s living it [his dream],” said the young chef’s mother, Lisa Witherspoon. “He feels like miracles can come true.”
