Sixth District Councilman Dee Andrews, the Long Beach Boys and Girls Club, the Long Beach Weed & Seed Program, and the youth of the 6th District are hosting a 6th District Youth Talent Show. The try-outs for the show are scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 15 from 2:30pm to 5pm, and the finals will be Saturday, Aug. 15 from 1pm to 3pm. Both events will take place at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Park Community Center, 1950 Lemon Ave.
“I know that our city has some really talented youth, and I am so happy to have the chance to showcase it. This event encourages our students to develop social and cultural skills. More so, it allows them the opportunity of fellowship with other youth,” said Andrews.
The talent show is open to all youth in Long Beach and it is co-sponsored by Long Beach Boys and Girls Club, whose youth will be organizing the event. In other words, it is an event that is “for the youth, by the youth.”
“We are looking forward to the event, and the youth are very excited to participate. It’s events like this that bring the community together with our youth,” said Keith Lilly, Long Beach Boys & Girls Club branch director. “This is a great venue to support our future leaders. Research shows that youth involved in music and performing arts score higher on their SAT scores, and this event will help inspire youth to reach such higher potentials,” said Tracy Colunga, Weed & Seed program coordinator.
First place prize is $100 and a performance spot on the main stage at the 2010 Martin Luther King Jr. Peace and Unity Parade Celebration. Second place prize is $50, and third place prize is $25. The talent show is free and open to the ages of 7—18 years old. Young people who can sing, dance, tell jokes, or have a special talent are encouraged to call the Office of Councilman Dee Andrews at (562) 570-6816.
