Students from the College of Business at Cal State Long Beach (CSULB) are offering free in-person tax preparation assistance to families making $67,000 or less, low-income students, seniors, nonresidents and individuals with limited English proficiency.
All participating student-volunteers are certified by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
This complimentary service is part of the IRS-sponsored Volunteer Income Tax Assistance clinic (VITA). In 2024, CSULB student volunteers filed state and federal tax returns for over 1,500 clients and garnered a total of over $1.2 million in refunds.
“VITA benefits both our business students and the local community,” said Professor Sudha Krishnan, faculty advisor for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, in a public statement. “The students get hands-on experience while also helping those in the community who may not have the disposable income to pay for a professional tax preparer.”
The VITA tax assistance offers face-to-face, drop-off, walk-in and virtual (Zoom) services. Appointments are recommended, but not required except for Zoom clients. Walk-in and drop-off clients will visit room 243 of the College of Business Building on the CSULB campus.
The hours of service for the program are Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. now until April 9.
On two Saturdays (March 8 and March 22), assistance will be available from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The service will be closed for spring break from March 31 through April 6. The full service schedule as well as the necessary items for clients to bring in can be viewed at sites.google.com/view/vitacsulb.
