NBA veteran Darrick Martin will host a free youth basketball day camp for boys and girls ages 7 to 17 years August 13-17. The camp will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. each day at St. Anthony High School in Long Beach. Martin, a 1988 graduate of St. Anthony HS, has been an NBA basketball player for 12 years and is currently a member of the Toronto Raptors.
The Darrick Martin Basketball & Books Youth Camp is designed to offer not only basketball instruction, but will also provide lessons on the importance of education and life-skills development. Martin will be on hand each day along with a host of NBA players and volunteers committed to empowering youth in St. Anthony’s Gymnasium.
“I have been very fortunate to have had such a long NBA basketball career but I was also blessed to be able to get a good education,” said Martin. “It is important to pass along what I’ve learned in life to the youth where I grew up.”
According to Brian Walsh, St. Anthony’s Athletic Director, “The camp will focus on development of skills which nourish the body, mind and spirit in a variety of areas. We’ll be offering everything from nutrition and hygiene, to goal setting, study skills and leadership development.” Camp participants will also receive a free camp t-shirt and lunch each day.
Applications may be picked up at St. Anthony High School, 620 Olive Avenue (corner of Olive and 6th Street), or downloaded from www.longbeachsaints.org.
Applications must be received at the high school by Friday, July 27, at 3 p.m. for consideration. Because of limited availability, we can only select 100 students to participate in this no-cost program.
