Six-time Grammy-winner David Sanborn will perform at the Richard and Karen Carpenter Performing Arts Center on the Cal State Long Beach campus March 15 at 2pm in a show to benefit Rotary International’s End Polio Now campaign.
Sanborn, who has released 24 albums— eight certified gold, one certified platinum— has won six Grammys for R&B, jazz and pop recordings. However, he was not always well enough to even blow into the instrument.
“I was in the hospital for a couple of years as a kid, in an iron lung and paralyzed from the neck down,” he said in a 2013 interview. “Gradually, I regained my strength, actually picked up the saxophone as therapy! to build up my lungs.”
End Polio Now seeks to eradicate polio by sponsoring the immunization of children in the three countries where the disease continues to wreak havoc: Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria.
