Officers were dispatched to the intersection of West 7th Street and Chestnut Avenue at approximately 7:10 a.m. Tuesday morning regarding a deadly traffic collision between a vehicle and an electric scooter.

The accident resulted in the death of the male adult who was driving the electric scooter.

By the time officers arrived on the scene, bystanders had already been rendering aid to the electric scooter driver. The Long Beach Fire Department arrived soon after and the driver was then transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead as a result of his injuries.

The preliminary investigation of the accident revealed that while riding westbound on West 7th Street, the electric scooter driver ran a red light at the intersection of Chestnut Avenue. While traveling through the intersection, the scooter collided with a 2018 Chrysler 300 riding northbound on Chestnut Avenue.

The Chrysler was driven by a 59-year-old female resident of Long Beach who remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation. Alcohol, drugs and distracted driving were not believed to be a factor in the collision for the Chrysler driver.

At this time, the driver of the electric scooter is only being identified as an adult male, pending next of kin notification by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.

Anyone who may have witnessed this collision is being asked to contact LBPD Collision Investigation Detail Detective Joseph Johnson at (562) 570-7355. Additionally, anonymous tips may be submitted through “LA Crime Stoppers” by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
