Disaster preparedness for pets

When it comes to preparing for a disaster, the focus shifts on the people in our own proximity, but pets deserve some love as well. What should people do when a major emergency arises and their pets are involved?
The American Red Cross suggests that all pet owners properly prepare for care of their animals in the event of an emergency. Here are some tips:
1. Prepare a pet-emergency kit, and keep it handy. The kit should contain the following:
• Food and water for three days for each pet
• Pet medical records
• Any medications that your pet will need
• A small litter box with litter for cats
• Doggie waste bags
• Extra leashes or harnesses
•Portable carriers or crates to secure pets
• Photos and descriptions of each pet to help identify them if they get lost or separated from you
2. Ask a trusted neighbor to look out for and retrieve your pet should an emergency occur while you are away from home. Make sure that person knows where to find your pet emergency kit.
3. Find out in advance where you might be able to take shelter with your pet in the event of a major disaster. Most human shelters will not be able to provide space for pets, so research other options you might have, such as pet-friendly hotels, homes of friends outside your immediate area or other animal-boarding facilities.
