The Signal Hill Police Department (SHPD) will be conducting a DUI checkpoint this Friday from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.

SHPD is partnering with the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for a special Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement mobilization to get impaired drivers off the street and to spread the word about this dangerous crime. The California OTS and NHTSA are funding Friday’s checkpoint.

As part of the enforcement campaign period, local police, sheriffs and the California Highway Patrol (CHP) will be deploying DUI Checkpoints and DUI Saturation Patrols during the upcoming DUI crackdown throughout the region, according to a statement from the City. Friday’s checkpoint is the first in this “crackdown” effort.

The checkpoint will take place at an undisclosed location within Signal Hill, a spokesperson from the police department said.

According to the NHTSA, 13,524 people died due to alcohol-impaired driving accidents in 2022.

It’s important to note that a driver can receive a DUI for being under the influence of certain prescription drugs, particularly those with a driving or operating machinery warning on the label, as well as for marijuana.

Drivers are encouraged to download the Designated Driver VIP, or “DDVIP,” free mobile app for Android or iPhone. The DDVIP app helps find nearby bars and restaurants that feature free incentives for the designated sober driver, from free non-alcoholic drinks to free appetizers and more.
