Just in time for the holidays, the official 2008 Griffith Observatory calendar, with color images by world famous photographers Julius Shulman and Juergen Nogai, is now available online and in local Southern California museums and bookstores.
Friends Of The Observatory (FOTO), the support group for the Griffith Observatory, commissioned the calendar to raise funds for the iconic landmark which reopened last year after major renovations.
The perfect holiday gift for the person who has everything, the art portfolio-style calendar captures interior and exterior views of Griffith Observatory’s award-winning renovation and exhibit program. Each view is a separate work of art suitable for framing and presented in an 11×14-inch format with high-resolution offset lithography and a satin coating.
Shulman, often called the “father of architectural photography,” has been photographing Los Angeles and the world for eight decades. He embraced the Modernist movement in the mid-20th Century and his work became the architectural face of Southern California and especially Los Angeles.
Juergen Nogai, born and raised in Germany, moved to the United States in 2000 and, within a year, had begun a friendship and partnership with Shulman. The opportunity to work with Shulman, a master of his field, helped to focus Nogai on architectural photography. Nogai and Shulman worked together in the spring of 2007 to capture the essence of Griffith Observatory for the calendar.
Proceeds from the calendar go to FOTO to support programs at Griffith Observatory. The calendar can be found in the Stellar Emporium at Griffith Observatory, the Los Angeles County Museum, Los Angeles Library and the Pasadena History Museum.
