Fire destroys playground at Admiral Kidd Park, investigation underway

A fire engulfed the playground at Admiral Kidd Park this past Sunday, July 18, leaving the play structure charred and collapsed. 

The Long Beach Fire Department responded to the fire at approximately 2 a.m. after receiving calls of smoke in the area. The blaze took firefighters 45 minutes to extinguish, said Long Beach Fire Captain Jack Crabtree.

This morning, Councilmember Roberto Uranga made a statement ensuring that the City will work to replace the playground area “as soon as possible.”

“I am devastated to hear of this senseless loss of playground equipment at Admiral Kidd Park, especially during a time when children are out on summer vacation and participating in summer camp activities,” Uranga said in a statement.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway, Crabtree said.
