Firefighters, community members work together to build playground in six hours

Long Beach firefighters and nearly 200 volunteers, including JetBlue employees and 8th District Councilmember Rae Gabelich, participated in the building of a KaBOOM! playground on Feb. 16 at the Fairfield Family YMCA, located at Atlantic Avenue and Del Amo Boulevard. The various community members worked together to build a complete playground in six hours.
KaBOOM! is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to “saving play for America’s children.” Its mission is to create great playspaces through the participation and leadership of communities, with the ultimate vision of a place to play within walking distance of every child in America.
“Long Beach firefighters have had the privilege to work on a few KaBOOM! projects in the city of Long Beach,” said Rex Pritchard, president of the Long Beach Firefighters, Local 372. “Giving children the ability to be physically active and in good health is something Long Beach firefighters are proud to support.”
