Firefighters teaming with Schipske to provide tour of 5th District fire stations

Fifth District Councilmember Gerrie Schipske is teaming up with the Long Beach Fire Department and the Long Beach Firefighters Association Local 372 to kick off the 39th Annual National Emergency Medical Services Week by hosting a tour of 5th Council District fire stations 5, 18 and 19 on Saturday, May 19 from 1pm to 5pm.
“This year’s theme is ‘EMS: More Than A Job. A Calling,’ and I believe that when residents visit our fire stations and talk with our firefighters they will agree that these men and women have a true calling to help and care for others in their hour of need,” said Schipske.
The tour, which can be done by walking, bicycling or riding to each of the fire stations will give residents an inside look at the services provided out of the three fire stations and a chance to pick up a carbon-monoxide detector, emergency-preparedness information, coloring books for kids and a hot dog or hamburger. Residents who visit all three fire stations will receive a chance to win a dinner for two at Baja Sonora.
The tour begins at 1pm at Fire Station No. 19, 3559 Clark Ave. Displays and information will be available regarding Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training and the American Red Cross’s emergency preparedness.
At 2:30pm, firefighters at Fire Station No. 18, 3361 Palo Verde Ave., will review the various fire equipment used and the procedures followed when they receive a call for emergency service. The first 100 people will receive a carbon-monoxide detector (one per household), which is now mandated by state law.
Starting at 4pm, the Long Beach Firefighters Association Local 372 will host a barbecue of hot dogs and hamburgers at Fire Station No. 5, 7575 E. Wardlow Rd. The day ends at 5pm with a drawing for dinner for two at Baja Sonora.
