The First Fridays Art Walk in Bixby Knolls will celebrate a theme of “Red, White and True” with patriotic-themed activities. The event will take place at businesses along Atlantic Avenue.
Special musical guests will include 4 Level Interchange at Nino’s, Justin Janer at Aura Thai/Bella Pizza, Darius Ivey at the Historical Society of Long Beach, Eusebio Akasa and Desirable D at the Allery, John Dean at Clover, Lizzie Rytting at DRNK and Nathan Rivera at Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf.
Local Stratis Financial mortgage broker Dennis C. Smith will once again organize an event that provides a place for residents to retire old flags. They can be donated in the parking lot at Nino’s Italian restaurant, 3853 Atlantic Ave. between 6:30pm and 9:30pm. At 7:30pm, Boy Scout Troop 29 will demonstrate the proper disposal of a natural-fiber flag in flame.
“This is our fifth year, and it has really become a great tradition for the July First Fridays event,” said Smith, a Bixby Knolls resident. “We see people who drop by every year with a few flags. And, of course, we have seen the Boy Scouts of Troop 29 grow-up over the years. In fact, a few of them have become Eagle Scouts.”
Other retired flags will be donated to the Boy Scouts to use in similar ceremonies. Nylon or other synthetic flags are buried according to flag retirement protocol.
All those who stop by can enter a free drawing hosted by Smith for two flags— one for an adult, and one for a child. The drawing will be held immediately following the flag retirement ceremony. Those interested may bring flags starting at 6:30pm.
Free parking will be available at the Bixby Business Center on the corner of Atlantic Avenue and San Antonio Drive.
