Los Cerritos Wetlands Trust and its partners— biologists and environmental educators Tia Blair and Alene Spindel of the ecological consulting firm Tidal Influence— will host a hike along the levy of the San Gabriel River, which bisects Los Cerritos Wetlands, on Saturday, April 4 at 8am. The event will include a tour of the Los Cerritos Wetlands that will take participants to the spot along the San Gabriel River where sea turtles tend to congregate.
“For part of our tour, we will view and discuss the Zedler Marsh eco-system while keeping an eye out for local wildlife,” said Elizabeth Lambe, executive director for Los Cerritos Wetlands Land Trust. “And much of our walk will take us through the Signal Hill Petroleum oil operations, where we will talk about the history of oil extraction and its impact on the wetlands. We will hike along Calloway marsh, take the PCH bridge over to the western levee and walk past both privately and publicly owned wetlands, where we will get a chance to check out the pumpkin patch property.”
Those interested in attending should meet at 7:45am in the driveway/parking area at the corner of 1st Street and Pacific Coast Highway in Seal Beach. No late-comers can be admitted for the tour, and all participants must stay for the entire tour, which will end by 10am. Kids are welcome, but they must be closely supervised and able to walk for two hours without needing to turn back. Participants should wear closed-toe shoes, and bring sunscreen and water. Kids under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
Participants are eligible to win prizes such as a T-shirt or tickets to the Aquarium of the Pacific.
