The Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts (CCPA) opens its 2007-2008 Masterworks series with a performance by the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra on Friday, Sept. 21 at 8 p.m. The program will include Felix Mendelssohn–Symphony No. 10; Edward Elgar– Introduction and Allegro; Franz Liszt–Rhapsody No. 2; AntonÃn Dvo_ák–Serenade in E Major; and Johannes Brahms–Hungarian Dances.
The series continues with five additional classical music performances by Trio Con Brio Copenhagen on Oct. 26; Chamber Orchestra Kremlin with conductor Misha Rachlevsky on February 1; Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center March 7; Juilliard String Quartet on April 11 and pianist Jon Kimura Parker on May 16.
The Hungarian Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra, founded in 1963 by former students of the Franz Liszt Music Academy, has become one of the most acclaimed ensembles of the Central European region, performing internationally from Carnegie Hall in New York to the Suntory Hall in Tokyo, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.
The orchestra was awarded the Grand Prix of the French Académie de Disque in Paris three times and has earned the “Record of the Year” award in Hungary numerous times during its career.
Its repertory spans almost the entire history of classical music, including pieces by Claudio Monteverdi, Johann Sebastian Bach, Antonio Vivaldi, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart through the Romantic era and on to 20th century composers.
On its recordings and in concert, the orchestra has worked with world-famous soloists, including Sviatoslav Richter, Yehudi Menuhin, Mstislav Rostropovich, and Isaac Stern. They have recorded more than 200 discs for Sony Classical, CBS, Teldec, EMI, Erato, Denon, and the Hungarian Hungaroton labels. The orchestra is led by founding member János Rolla. One of Hungary’s foremost violinists, Rolla was awarded the prestigious “Kossuth Prize” in 1985 and Rolla received the “Chevalier de la Culture” Award in 1992.
Tickets for the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra’s performance at the CCPA are on sale now. Tickets cost $20 each and tickets for the entire series of six performances is $120.
