The public is invited to attend garden tours at Rancho Los Cerritos Historic Site Sunday, Sept. 2 at 2:30 p.m. to celebrate the arrival of the changing seasons with a guided tour of its extensive, lush grounds. Discover the beauty and history of the main garden, orchard and courtyard.
This historic site boasts many unique plants and features. Some trees date back to the 1840s when John Temple, owner of the 27,000-acre rancho from 1844-1866, started the garden. Additional features that guests will explore during the one-hour tour are a water tower, a cast-iron tallow pot from the 1840s and an adobe horno.
The rancho is normally open for public tours Wednesday to Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and the special garden tours are offered the first Sunday of each month from March to October. For special accommodations, call at least 48 hours in advance.
The event, given by Friends of Rancho Los Cerritos and Rancho Los Cerritos Historic Site, Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine and the city of Long Beach, is free and tours are given by reservation only.
