A simple definition of fluidity is the ability of a substance to flow easily. Water will move freely down a stream, unless the level drastically drops and becomes tainted with mud and other debris that restricts the flow.
The automotive powertrain consists of many moving, meshing parts, meaning when the vehicle is moving, there is metal-to-metal contact of corresponding elements. Specified fluids are what lubricate and/or keeps those systems at a consistent operating temperature. The lifeblood of any powertrain is its fluids, and proper maintenance of these fluids is essential to safeguard against premature wear.
Heat and wear
The engine has internal components that require oil to both lubricate and cool. Engine oil is designed to adhere to moving components, developing a cushioning film that protects and cools. Regular servicing of the engine oil introduces clean oil to the system, replacing tainted oil that is full of contaminants. The tainted oil weakens the film and increases engine heat, leading to accelerated wear. Always use the oil that is recommended by the manufacturer of your particular vehicle.
Coolant/antifreeze does double duty
As oil lubricates the inner workings of an engine, the coolant/antifreeze cools the outer engine walls and allows operation during extreme cold. Engine coolants/antifreezes also contain rust inhibitors and lubricate essential parts. Water pumps, radiators and thermostats require lubrication to operate smoothly, and when the coolant/antifreeze is neglected, the properties are weakened, and this leads to rust building up and weakening, slowing or restricting the coolant’s attributes. Rust buildup can cause leaks internally. Water should never be a replacement for proper engine coolant/antifreeze. Coolant does not dissipate, so if the level is low, it may be a system leak, which should be checked out immediately.
Shifting gears
Most transmissions require a brand-specific fluid and periodic maintenance; check the owner’s manual or call your trusted repair shop. In my experience, most transmission failures are a direct result of incorrect maintenance.
Turning and stopping
Fluids in the brake and power-steering systems are routinely dismissed as nonessential. However, damage to these systems starts internally with dirty, contaminated fluid damaging the lacework of internal seals, pumps and hoses, so periodic servicing is much less expensive than replacing parts damaged by neglect.
The vehicle’s owner’s manual offers a variety of manufacturer-recommended services, and a cursory read will help to keep that faithful four-wheeled friend flowing smoothly down the road.
