Long Beach foodies can rejoice—Bixby Knolls is inviting residents to try signature entrees, drinks, desserts and more from around 30 of its beloved local businesses.

The first ever Taste of Bixby Knolls, which will take place Sunday, Oct. 16 from noon to 4 p.m., offers much more than just food and drinks. The streets from E. San Antonio Drive to Long Beach Boulevard and 36th Street will become a smorgasbord of free activities, live music and delicious aromas of food.

“The goal is to try to get people from all across the city and surrounding cities to come and enjoy and try and discover our food scene and restaurants,” said Myra Pimentel, project manager for the Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association (BKBIA). “So it’s going to be like a Sunday funday for your family or your friends.”

Residents can participate in screen printing, train rides, face paintings, toy car races, caricature drawings and Disney character meet-ups—all for free. Vintage car lovers can head to George’s 50’s Diner for a car show in the parking lot.

Tasting tickets can be purchased for $1 each and residents will have free reign on where and how to spend their precious passes. Each participating restaurant will offer sample-sized plates of their most popular items ranging from two to six tickets.

Restaurants involved include: Thunderbolt Pizza, Lola’s Mexican Cuisine, La Taqueria Brand, Taboon Mediterranean, Noona Mercato, Hangry Belly, Waffle Luv and Tony’s Kitchen, to name a few. In between appetizing entrees, residents can purchase drinks at Beachwood Brewing, Ambitious Ales, Dutch’s Brewhouse, Smog City Brewing, Willmore Wine Bar and more locations.

The event is sponsored by fifth district councilwoman Stacy Mungo Flanigan and the Long Beach Airport, both of whom provided grants. The two months of planning was mostly spent recruiting restaurants, breweries, coffee shops and retailers for the event, Pimentel said.

“I’m excited about the fact that people will be encouraged to go to new restaurants that they wouldn’t normally go to,” Pimentel said. “And it will be sort of like a scavenger hunt.”

Residents can purchase tickets online and retrieve them in-person at The Expo Arts Center. Same-day tickets will be sold at Steelcraft Long Beach, Ambitious Ales and the Better Half Boutique corner.

Participants will also receive a map showing the stores involved and a wristband to receive discounts from select retail shops in Bixby Knolls.

Ticket sales will go toward the BKBIA to support various programs throughout the year.

“It’s gonna be, I think, very interactive for the community to kind of connect with these restaurants on a different level [where] they normally just come to have dinner … it’s going to be a little more involved,” Pimentel said.
