Global Studies Magnet Programs prepare students for the future

LBUSD now has four new magnets, just funded at 7.6 million dollars by the U.S. Department of Education. They include Dooley Global Studies Magnet School, which offers the elementary grades Global Studies, working toward the International Baccalaureate.
Continuing the trend at the middle school level, Lindsey Academy’s magnet program features International Studies, also working toward International Baccalaureate. Jordan High School, already an International Baccalaureate magnet, will upgrade its technology and include 9th and 10th grade students.
With these three programs, it is now possible for a student to enter kindergarten and have a clear academic path through middle school all the way through the 12th Grade.
International Baccalaureate (IB) is an independent, non-governmental, non-profit educational organization. It is a recognized leader in the field of international education, encouraging students to be active learners, well-rounded individuals and engaged world citizens.
Also, top universities throughout the world recognize this IB diploma as proof that the student has completed rigorous college preparation studies.
Poly High School’s Pacific or “Pac” Rim Academy has been a smaller learning community on the Poly campus for over 15 years. Students in the Pac Rim Academy are exposed to international business and study Japanese and Mandarin Chinese, which prepare them for careers in the Pacific Rim trade industry.
Pac Rim students join DECA, an international association of high school students who are studying marketing, management and business.
DECA students also travel to other cities and states for competitions with other DECA students from all over the country.
The new grant will allow the Pac Rim Academy to expand its course offerings to include incoming Freshman students and create a technologically advanced language lab for Mandarin Chinese and Japanese.
