The Long Beach Nordholm Classic golf tournament will take place Friday, August 3, at Recreation Park. The event is the annual fundraiser for the local chapter of the Special Olympics and all proceeds benefit local athletes. Some spaces are still available.
Jeff Severson will host the event, which is sponsored by the Special Olympics Boosters. Severson is a popular local television talk-show host and Super Bowl alumnus-turned-musician.
“It’s one of the most fun, casual tournaments in the area,” said event chairwoman Sylvia Jecmen.
A shotgun start at 1 p.m. launches the event, and golfers will enjoy a sampling of food and beverages at various holes around the course. With donated hot pizza, deli sandwiches and ice cream, participants will be well fed as they try their best for the Nordholm Classic trophies.
According to Jecmen, the awards banquet will take place the evening of the event and includes a donated steak dinner grilled by the Long Beach Firefighters. Golfers are welcome to bring their pre-registered guests to the banquet.
Hundreds of athletes from the Long Beach area benefit from the Nordholm Classic, which is named for Betty Nordholm, who brought Special Olympics to Long Beach more than 30 years ago.
Special Olympics receives no tax support. All coaches are volunteers and funds support athletes’ travel to competitions, uniforms and other expenses. Coaching includes many sports from swimming to skiing, forming a year-round program to enhance self-esteem and achievement by athletes with disabilities.
Registration for the tournament is $175 per golfer. Sponsorship opportunities remain, from the Hole Sponsorship level at $100 to Eagle Sponsorship at $5,000, which includes a foursome in the tournament plus four dinner guests and other benefits.
