Goodwill SOLAC appoints community leaders to its board of trustees

Goodwill, Serving the People of Southern Los Angeles County recently named two community leaders to its board of trustees: Mike Murray and Ardel Guillamas Avelino.
“Their individual and combined expertise is significant to continuing and growing Goodwill’s mission to provide education, skill development and job opportunities for people with barriers to employment,” states a press release about the appointments.
Murray worked for GTE/Verizon for over 35 years, starting in operations as a departmental clerk and advancing to positions from public & external affairs to philanthropic program evaluator, as well as managing grant requests submitted to GTE. His most recent position prior to retirement was director of Government & External Affairs with Verizon in Southern California.
Murray has held numerous leadership positions in Long Beach, including: chairman of the Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce; president of Better Learning After School Today; president of Leadership Long Beach; co-chair of the Long Beach 10-Year Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness (adopted 2010); chairman, US VETS Long Beach Business Advisory Council; president of the Long Beach Education Foundation; and United Cambodian Community Board.
Avelino is a registered nurse and is currently the senior director for St. Mary Medical Center, with administrative oversight of clinic operations. He has vast knowledge and extensive experience in the realms of quality, compliance, patient experience, program management and clinical operations, according to Goodwill SOLAC.
Avelino has served on various clinical and operational leadership roles for the past 15 years, exclusively at St. Mary Medical Center, and is a member of the honor society of nursing. He is a graduate of Long Beach City College’s nursing program, where he also served as adjunct faculty for nearly 10 years, teaching critical care and leadership.
