Long Beach YMCA’s Camp Oakes provides an answer to the age-old question that can strike fear in the hearts of an entire family, “where should we go on our summer vacation?”
Family camp offers fewer frills and more time to reconnect with each other and nature, something American families are longing for at times like these.
Family camp at YMCA Camp Oakes is a long-standing tradition. Families are offered an affordable way to spend vacation time together in a pristine setting–without distractions or commercialism–since 1958.
Registration for the 2007 camping season is going on right now. Session dates are Friday, August 31 through Monday, September 3. For more information about YMCA Camp Oakes Family Camp, or to register, call the camping services office at (562) 279-1710 or visit www.campoakes.org
Activities like canoeing, frisbee, archery, astronomy, hiking, swimming, wall and rope courses, and horseback riding abound at YMCA Camp Oakes.
Unlike traditional vacations where it’s 24-7 togetherness, there’s time for separate activities at family camp. So if horseback riding is a must for one child and swimming is mandatory for another, everyone is happy.
And don’t forget the real fun. In the evenings, campfires, skits, and games replace staring at the TV or a blinking video game. Seeing Dad dressed up in a hula skirt and Mom in a sailor outfit singing and dancing to “The Salty Dog Rag” can do wonders for family bonding.
Accommodations run the gamut and include tenting, dormitories, and Adirondack cabins. Three nights of camping, including meals and snacks at Camp Oakes would cost a family of four about $490.
