More than 100 employees of Miller Children’s Hospital and Long Beach Memorial Medical Center “got the red out” by wearing red to help raise awareness for women’s heart disease. “National Wear Red Day,” the first Friday in February each year, supports women’s heart disease awareness.
“This is a great event that helps raise awareness and reminds the public, especially women, that heart disease can be prevented,” says Peggy Kalowes, RN, PhD, CNS, director of the Center for Women’s Cardiac Health & Research. “Most women don’t know heart disease is the number-one killer of women over age 25, and 80 percent of women have not had preventive cardiac care screenings.”
Nearly twice as many women die from heart disease, stroke and other forms of cardiovascular disease than from all other forms of cancer, including cancer of the breast.
