Imitating Life: Group show to explore transformative nature of creative process

The nonprofit Greenly Art Space, 2698 Junipero Ave., Suite 113, will present a collection of art that explores the theme of transformation through trials with its exhibit Beauty from Ashes. The show will open Friday, June 20 with a reception from 6:30pm to 9:30pm.
Greenly director Kimberly Hocking and Biola University intern Crystal Solares have brought multiple local artists together to share their unique stories of how the creative process has helped in their journey through life’s difficult experiences. The show features paintings, drawings, spoken word and dance. The focus of the show is to shed light on the growth that comes through brokenness and to encourage hope, Hocking said.

“By exploring the idea of transformative life events as depicted and/or explored through art, we are bringing awareness to the community of childhood abuse survivors and Alzheimer’s victims, to name a few,” Hocking said. “The exhibition’s theme hopes to illustrate how, in confronting life’s challenges, one can be transformed.”
Steven Marr, one of the artists in the show, will display two pieces he did after his mother’s death. He had been her caregiver for five years as her Alzheimer’s disease progressed.
“Art and creativity have been a major modality in my treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder,” he said, adding that the two pictures “represent a new, deeper appreciation of life which such an experience affords.”
After the opening, this exhibit will be open for public viewing Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 11am to 2pm, or through appointment by calling (562) 533-4020. The show will run through Aug. 22. The opening reception is free and open to the public.
