Gallery Expo, 4321 Atlantic Ave., will feature an exhibit recognizing Black History Month from Feb. 4 to Feb. 26. The show will feature the works of two Long Beach artists, Brandon Harrison and Andre Ajibade, as well as work by 13 other artists from the surrounding area.
Having worked in fashion design most of his life, Harrison later turned his focus to art. His works have been featured at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Museum of Tolerance and the Museum of Latin American Art. In 2007, he got his first non-commercial art commissions at Harbor View Adolescent Center, H.V. Group Home and College Hospital in Cerritos. He uses iconic, bold, graphic imagery to convey clear and concise messages through the paintings featured at Gallery Expo. He also uses other peripheral elements and embellishments such as collage and beading to enhance the work exhibited. The 10-set series of paintings depicts black women in American society and the world.
Ajibade is an oil pastel specialist who primarily paints people, whose essence he captures in his renderings of their daily lives. He likes projecting the colorful expressions, cultures and lifestyles of numerous people. Having spent a number of his youthful years in Nigeria, a good number of his art captures scenes in rural Africa at its fullest and with its vibrant color. His work has been part of group shows in galleries around Los Angeles, including the 2004 Art and Democracy show at The Angel’s Gate Cultural Center in San Pedro.
The artist reception for the Black History Month exhibit will be Saturday, Feb 12, from 6pm to 8pm. The reception is open to the public. Gallery hours are Fridays and Saturdays from 4pm to 8pm. Â
