In its efforts to be bike-friendliest U.S. city, LB launches cycling website

Want to learn more about cycling in Long Beach? How to participate in city plans to make Long Beach the most bicycle-friendly city in the country? Visit www.BikeLongBeach.org, the city’s new website that provides information about all things “bike” in Long Beach.
Launched on April 2, www.BikeLongBeach.org provides a convenient, one-stop location to acquire cycling resources and stay informed about the latest events and happenings for cyclists of all skill levels. Follow the city’s bicycle ambassador Tony Cruz on his worldwide professional racing travels, upload and share cycling photos and videos, view and contribute to a bike calendar of events, access a variety of bike-mapping applications, and discover more about the city’s pilot projects and programs.
The website soon will feature a Bike 101 section, which will provide advice and tips on the following topics: getting ready to ride; bike & helmet fit selection; bike laws; bike maintenance; taking a bike on a ride; coping with a collision; and bike safety.
In order to be the most bicycle-friendly urban city in the United States, the City of Long Beach is updating the Bicycle Master Plan and making bold strides to create an environment and culture where bicycling is a safe, viable and preferred mode of transportation. Check out the “Planning” section of the website to learn how the Bicycle Master Plan update will include strategies for creating safe, connected and easy-to-navigate bike routes; offering bike friendly public facilities, transit and shops; promoting bike share opportunities throughout the city; encouraging the community, through education, to create a culture where cyclists and motorists interact safely; and implementing fun, healthy bicycle programs.
The city will roll out a handful of pilot projects designed to foster a bike-friendly city including protected bike lanes, bike boulevards and sharrows (special shared bike/car routes.) More than $10 million in dedicated, bicycle-specific grant funding will help Long Beach implement bicycle projects in the next three years.
