Incumbents have strong showing in 2026 Long Beach primaries

There is scant change in the air this election season as incumbent candidates hold strong in the June 2 primary election. From mayor and city auditor to city council and school board members, residents may see the same faces representing them for another four years. 

A candidate only needs more than 50% of the votes in their race to win outright and avoid a general election in November. Long Beach’s District 5 councilmember seat is the only race as of now that’s close between the two candidates Megan Kerr and Tara Riggi. 

Votes are still being counted, with the Associated Press estimating 62% of the votes for the Long Beach mayoral race have been tallied. It will be weeks before every vote is counted. However, for some races with results already highly skewed in one direction, that may not matter. 

As of June 3, the Los Angeles County Registrar estimates 23% of LA County residents voted in the election. 

The Long Beach election results as of 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 3 are as follows:  

City Auditor

Laura Doud (incumbent): 71.15% of the votes

Ginny Gonzales: 28.85% of the votes

Mayor 

Rex Richardson (incumbent): 56.63% of the votes

Joshua Rodriguez: 19.96% of the votes

Chris Sweeney: 10.21% of the votes

Terri Rivers: 5.21% of the votes

Lee Goldin: 5.18% of the votes

Oscar Cancio: 2.82% of the votes

District 1

Mary Zendejas (incumbent): 50.86% of the votes

Anthony Bryson: 14.85% of the votes

Deb Kahookele: 13.81% of the votes

Tamika Wagner-Osio: 11.53% of the votes

Brock Goleman: 4.64% of the votes

Lori Logan: 4.32% of the votes

District 3

Kristina Duggan (incumbent): 66.47% of the votes

Rebecca Hinderer: 25.69% of the votes

Ronald Sampson: 5.45% of the votes

Brian Cochrane: 2.39% of the votes

District 5

Megan Kerr (incumbent): 51.47% of the votes

Tara Riggi: 48.53% of the votes

District 7

Vivian Malauulu: 75.52% of the votes

Dameon Gordon: 17.36% of the votes

Jameis Shuford: 7.12% of the votes

District 9

Joni Ricks-Oddie (incumbent): 66.49% of the votes

Sequoia Neff: 33.51% of the votes

LBUSD District 1

Maria Isabel Lopez (incumbent): 75.68% of the votes

Deborah L. Betance: 24.32% of the votes

LBUSD District 5

Diana Craighead (incumbent): 52.52% of the votes

Maureen “Quinn” Flaherty: 35.72% of the votes

Sara Socheata Pol-Im: 11.67% of the votes
