Residents are invited to protect the planet at Long Beach’s Save the Planet, Be the Hero: Earth Month Kickoff Event on Saturday, March 29.
This free, family-friendly event will educate the community on how to take action to protect themselves, others and the planet for a healthier environment. The event is organized by the Long Beach Health Department, Tobacco Education and Prevention Program, the City’s Office of Climate Action and the Neighbor-to-Neighbor Program.
“Through this Neighbor-to-Neighbor Program event, we are providing an opportunity for our community to not only learn about environmental stewardship and the dangers of tobacco, but to do so while building strong connections with their neighbors,” said Mayor Rex Richardson in a public statement. “We are committed to bringing people together to inspire action and create a healthier, more sustainable Long Beach.”
The Earth Month kickoff event will feature interactive games, educational booths and giveaways meant to inspire the community to take steps towards sustainable and greener options. There will be hands-on activities focused on combating climate change, and people can learn how small steps can lead to large changes in the environment.
The Tobacco Education and Prevention Program will educate visitors on the dangers of tobacco use and promote healthy, tobacco-free lifestyles. Residents can also learn about the impact of tobacco on the environment, particularly through cigarette litter, as cigarette butts are the most littered item in the world.
The Earth Month kickoff event will also serve as the launch of the Long Beach Climate Action Toolkit, a resource for residents interested in taking their climate hero training to the next level. The toolkit will be distributed to people at the event, and available on the Neighbor-to-Neighbor Program webpage beginning March 31.
Those interested in attending are encouraged to register online, but registration is not required.
