Kickball tournament to benefit cancer foundation, City of Hope

The National Law Enforcement Cancer Support Foundation will host the fifth annual Chrissy Strong-Marshall Memorial Kickball Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 24 at the baseball fields at El Dorado Park. The event is a fundraiser for the foundation and the City of Hope National Medical Center.
Retired Long Beach Police Department Commander Josef Levy, a cancer survivor who serves as president of the foundation, said Strong-Marshall was “a friend to many” as well as bureau manager for the City of Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation & Marine, where she was responsible for overseeing all recreation programs in Long Beach.
“Chrissy was known for her passion and dedication to the Long Beach community and promoted inclusion for all people,” Levy said. “But while fighting for others, Chrissy was fighting her own battle against cancer, which she valiantly fought for seven years, until she passed away in 2009 at the age of 40. Each year, this popular tournament brings together Long Beach city employees and friends to participate in a fun-filled day while raising funds for two charities: the National Law Enforcement Cancer Support Foundation and the City of Hope.”
This year, 12 teams will battle it out on the field with the winning team taking home bragging rights and the trophy. The Long Beach Police Officers Association will be defending last year’s championship trophy and will also be providing a free barbeque lunch to all participants.
The National Law Enforcement Cancer Support Foundation provides free emotional support, guidance and resources to all members of the law-enforcement community during a cancer experience.
As a volunteer-driven, donor-supported nationwide organization, it comprises a network of law-enforcement cancer survivors who are committed to serve others by upholding bravery, faith, strength and courage during a cancer journey, Levy said.
Admission is free and open to the public.
Funds are raised through the teams’ registration fees, corporate sponsorships and opportunity drawings at the tournament.
The event will take place on the fields between Willow and Spring Streets at El Dorado Park, which is located at 2800 Studebaker Rd.
