Local youth can cast their lines and test the open waters during the return of the Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine (PRM)’s annual Free Youth Fishing Derby.
This community event, organized in collaboration with the Daniel Hernandez Youth Foundation and California Department of Fish and Wildlife, will take place Saturday, Nov. 15 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at El Dorado East Regional Park (7550 E. Spring St.).
“The Youth Fishing Derby is a wonderful opportunity for our young community members to learn new skills and enjoy some friendly competition while building lasting memories,” said Fourth District Councilmember Daryl Supernaw in a public statement.
The Free Youth Fishing Derby has been a local fixture for more than 20 years, inviting kids ages 17 and under to partake in outdoor recreation, learn expert fishing tips and compete to win prizes like fishing gear and gift cards.
Event registration will begin at 8 a.m. onsite and a raffle will begin at 1 p.m. Fishing poles and tackle will be provided for free to participating youth, but they may also bring their own gear. Those 16 and older are required to have a valid California State Fishing License to participate. Vehicle entry into El Dorado Regional Park is free.
“Our Fishing in The City (FIC) Program, along with our partners, is proud to add meaningful education to youth with this partnership, a testament to what can be achieved through collaboration,” said Brian Young, California Department of Fishing and Wildlife FIC Coordinator, in a public statement. “Lake Area 2 will be stocked with channel catfish and fishing equipment will be available for loan. FIC will also assist families needing help setting up their fishing rods.”
