LB aluminum-can recycling contest now underway

Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster announced last week that the City of Long Beach is participating in the Cans for Cash City Recycling Challenge. The contest, created by the United States Conference of Mayors and Novelis Corporation, is free to participants and challenges cities across the country to collect recyclable aluminum beverage cans and develop innovative ideas for promoting participation. The Challenge lasts four weeks, ending on October 31.
“This challenge is a fun, engaging way to remind people in our community to recycle, which is easy to do and great for the environment,” Foster said. “By participating in the Cans for Cash City Recycling Challenge, we’re showing that Long Beach is committed to a sustainable future.”
The monthly tonnage of aluminum cans from all residential households, City operations and local recycling and redemption sites will be totaled and submitted as part of the program. It is easy for Long Beach to get involved, and there are multiple locations where aluminum cans may be dropped off throughout the month of October:

• All 12 Long Beach libraries
• Long Beach City Hall lobby, 333 W. Ocean Blvd.
• Conservation Corps of Long Beach, 340 Nieto Ave.
• ASI Recycling Center at CSULB, 5800 Atherton
• ARC Recycling Center, 5674 Cherry Ave.
• Residential purple residential recycling bins

Long Beach will compete with cities across the country, including Los Angeles, Miami, Atlanta and Austin, to collect the most recyclable aluminum beverage cans and receive awards up to $10,000. Winning cities will be determined by the ratio of the city population to the total number of aluminum beverage cans recycled. Any winnings will be used to support the Long Beach Friends of the Library, which is partnering with the City to help set up drop-off bins at all 12 libraries.
Partners of the City of Long Beach Cans for Cash City Recycling Challenge include the Long Beach Office of Sustainability, the Environmental Services Bureau, the Long Beach Public Library, the Long Beach Airport, Port of Long Beach, Conservation Corps of Long Beach, CSULB, and ARC Recycling Center.

Results from the Challenge will be determined by November 27, with winners announced in January 2010.
