The Long Beach City Council approved 6th District Councilmember Dee Andrews’s agenda item this week requesting the Council consider naming a park in his district the NAACP Freedom Park, according to Andrews’s office. The item will now move forward to the Housing and Neighbors Committee, as well as the Parks and Recreation Commission.
“This is a great undertaking, and I truly appreciate my colleagues support on this item,” Andrews said. “It justly proves that Long Beach’s strongest asset is its diversity.”
The six-acre park, located at 2300 Martin Luther King, Jr. Ave., was acquired by the City of Long Beach in 2007. Renovations to the park completed in February 2012 include a bike path, mini-park and parking lot. The funding to purchase and renovate the park came from 2005 RDA bonds, as well as other state and federal bonds, according to Andrews’s office.
The legislative item was coauthored by Councilmembers Patrick O’Donnell and Suzie Price.
